ReincarNATE: We're Going to Prove It

A little over a year ago, a certain comics writer (who shall remain nameless) took to Twittter to explain what other comics writers and artists needed to do in order to be successful. He drew a boundary around what comics should be, and what they shouldn't be, as if there were set rules one must abide by. At the time--and still to do this day--I thought it was a load of bullshit.

And I expressed as much, in my own tweets, noting that artistic ambition shouldn't be corralled or hobbled; vision shouldn't be compromised or distilled. You tell the story you have to tell, in the way you see best to tell it. I remember getting a reply from Phil Hester--the amazing Phil Hester, who has long been an inspiration to me--that said, "sometimes you have to draw a line in the sand and say 'you're wrong about this, and I'm going to prove it.'"

With ReincarNATE, we've drawn our line.

For those who don't know, the book was rejected by every publisher. All of them. Even Viper Comics--who we are massively grateful for--would only go so far as a digital release. Nonetheless, Keith, Chris, Jim, and I would not relent from giving this book the treatment we thought it deserved. Look, I've been rejected before; I've invested time, energy, and money into projects that have gone nowhere, and I've walked away. But ReincarNATE isn't that project. There's something special about Keith's excellent art, Chris's atmospheric colors, and Jim's smooth lettering. We believe in this book, and thanks to all our supporters, we've been given the yes where everyone else said no.

But we've haven't proved anything--not yet. That will come when the book is completed, released, and in all of our hands. I'm rarely as confident in my work as I am in ReincarNATE, and that's why I can say, without a doubt, that the finished book will be something special. You will all be glad you invested in its creation.

I've said it before, and I will likely say it again: Thank you. Thank you for taking the time to explore our work, for finding it worthwhile enough to invest your hard-earned dollars. All of us working on ReincarNATE can't express our appreciation enough.
